Discover the advantages of cycling as we enter the warmest time of year.
Spending more time outdoors has benefits both mentally and physically. Trekking across mountains, walking the dog, or simply doing your gardening, the beauty of the outdoors is that you can enjoy it anytime, with anyone, all while becoming healthier.
Working with our friends at Madison, we have a similar goal; to provide our customers with great products to enhance their experiences outdoors. But how much of an impact can an e-bike make this summer? Studies suggest that people who own e-bikes ride them more often and farther, spending more time outdoors and reportedly having more fun due to the less strenuous activity.
Let’s dive into the advantages of being on 2 wheels as we enter the warmest time of the year:
Mental Benefits of Cycling:
Reduces Stress and Anxiety:
Cycling, like many forms of exercise, triggers the release of endorphins, the brain's natural mood lifters. Cycling outdoors, especially in scenic areas, has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, leaving you feeling calmer and more relaxed.
Improves Mental Clarity:
The repetitive motion of cycling can provide a form of meditation, helping clear your mind. It's an opportunity to disconnect from daily stresses, reset, and gain mental clarity. Many cyclists report feeling more focused and clear-headed after a ride.
Boosts Mood and Mental Health:
Exercise, including cycling, can help combat feelings of depression and anxiety. The combination of physical activity, endorphin release, and time outdoors catching some Vitamin D can significantly improve your mood, making cycling an excellent activity for mental well-being.
Enhances Cognitive Function:
Regular physical activity, including cycling, has been linked to improved brain health. It enhances memory, concentration, and cognitive function.
Fosters a Sense of Achievement:
Cycling provides clear, measurable goals, whether it’s a longer distance, a faster pace, or a steeper hill. Reaching these milestones gives a sense of accomplishment and boosts self-esteem.
Physical Benefits of Cycling:
Cardiovascular Fitness:
While e-bikes provide some motor assistance, riders still have to pedal, which helps improve cardiovascular health. It can increase heart rate, improve circulation, and build endurance, leading to better heart and lung function.
Muscle Strength:
Riding an e-bike engages several muscle groups, including the legs, hips, and core. Over time, regular cycling helps strengthen and tone these muscles. The level of assistance can be adjusted, allowing riders to progressively increase effort as their muscles get stronger.
Weight Management:
Cycling on an e-bike can contribute to weight loss or maintaining a healthy weight. The exercise helps burn calories, and e-bike riders often end up riding longer distances than they would on a traditional bike due to the added assistance.
Joint Health:
E-bikes provide a low-impact workout, meaning there's less stress on your knees and joints compared to activities like running. This makes them an excellent choice for people with joint issues or those who are recovering from injuries.
Better Stamina:
While e-bikes offer motorised assistance, they still require pedalling effort. Over time, riders develop increased stamina and endurance, bettering their ability to cycle longer distances or tackle more difficult terrains.
Flexibility in Intensity:
E-bikes offer variable levels of assistance, which means you can control the intensity of your ride. You can choose a lower level of assistance for a more intense workout or a higher level for a more relaxed ride. This adaptability makes e-bikes suitable for a wide range of fitness levels.
Although having a 40% higher carbon footprint, during manufacture, than conventional bicycles, the manufacturing of an e-bike produces 33x less carbon dioxide than that of a small hatchback, as well as saving on average 249g of carbon dioxide for every kilometre travelled when compared to a vehicle. All aspects of these e-bikes are recyclable, with only the motor being partially recyclable, resulting in a positive sustainable impact when compared to all other modes of transport.
As much as we all enjoy the beautiful scenes that summer brings, we have the responsibility to keep nature healthy. Madison helps provide electric bikes to take one step towards a more environmentally conscious community, allowing you to travel further and say yes to more adventures without worry.
