Bakewell

Bakewell and the Peak District has an abundance of activities to suit everyone.

Bakewell is perfectly positioned between the White Peak and Dark Peak, with rolling limestone hills and valleys to the south, or head north for the more rugged gritstone landscape, bigger hills or some climbing and bouldering. We have multiple trails and disused railway lines to walk or cycle along, from the gentle to the high octane along classic Dark Peak routes from Edale and the Hope Valley.

Bakewell itself has its own fascinating museum, boutique and individual shops, with over 49 places to enjoy coffee and cake! For something a little more restorative, our staff recommend local breweries such as Thornbridge, Peak Ales and some interesting micro-breweries; The Dancing Duck, Wolds Farm and Birchover Brewery. For Whisky the Wee Dram is a must!

There are many walks in and around Bakewell itself, from a gentle stroll along the river, a walk to Chatsworth, or Lathkill Dale and beyond. Amble along the Monsal Trail, stop off at Hassop Station for a little sustenance, then continue along through the tunnels and over the Viaduct for some fantastic scenery. This is a great route for families, individuals, walkers and cyclists alike. 

With food and music festivals, the Bakewell Agricultural and Horticultural Show, artisan fairs, the Chatsworth Country Show and RHS Flower Show all taking place throughout the year, there's plenty going on and that's before you look at the history and heritage of the local area. There’s the UNESCO World Heritage Centre at Cromford - The Derwent Valley Mills, a birthplace of industry with Arkwright’s spinning mills, lead mining, the National Stone Centre, Lumsdale Falls, to name but a few. 

If you’re seeking out historic houses and gardens, take a look at Chatsworth House, Haddon Hall, Hardwick House and Thornbridge Hall.
