The extraordinary countryside around Sherborne has walks to suit every type of visitor. From an easy amble around the impressive castle and lake to a more challenging hike around Milbourne Port and Hanover Wood, you’re sure to find a route that suits your style of exploring. For the seasoned adventurer, there are several long-distance routes that pass through the town; most notably the historic Monarch’s Way trail which follows the route King Charles ll took after his defeat at the Battle of Worcester in 1651. The full trail is 615 miles long, starting at Alcester and finishing in Shoreham. You can join the trail at Sherborne and walk 8 miles to the market town of Yeovil and if you don’t fancy the round trip, there are regular trains to Sherborne that will have you back in just 5 minutes.
If architecture and history are what you’re after, Sherborne has plenty to offer. Alongside an impressive Abbey Church, this small town also boasts two beautiful castles that are well worth visiting. The Old Sherborne Castle is now a fascinating ruin currently in the care of English Heritage while the present Sherborne Castle features an impressive collection of art and furniture, with gardens and a lake created by the renowned garden designer Capability Brown.
